The 45th Space Wing of the U.S. Air Force is in charge of the global GPS satellite system, and the 45th is in the process of significantly upgrading GPS space and ground control capabilities. A key piece of the upgrade is a new generation of “IIF” GPS satellites (see photo). The first of the new IIF satellites is scheduled to launch from Cape Canaveral, aboard a Delta IV rocket, late this evening.

Generation IIF satellite upgrades compared to existing satellites include: two-times greater signal accuracy, stronger new signals for civil and commercial aviation, better jamming resistance for military uses, and on-board software that is more easily re-programmed remotely.

Boeing is set to create a dozen of the new IIF satellites, and the entire constellation of 26-plus GPS satellites will be upgraded in the coming years.
